Sixth formers put their Mind to it

About Stafford 14-19 Partnership

The Stafford 14-19 Partnership is a partnership of five of the education providers in Stafford: Blessed William Howard Catholic High School, King Edwards VI High School, Sir Graham Balfour School, Stafford Manor High School and The Weston Road Academy.

The partners collaborate with each other to maximise the post-16 opportunities for the students in their schools. Central to this aim, is offering prospective sixth formers the broadest possible selection of courses so they can tailor their choices to suit their future career aspirations.

Previously it was known as the Stafford Collegiate and was based at the Chetwynd Centre on Newport Road in Stafford. The Partnership now has its office within Stafford Manor High School and all lessons are taught within one of the five schools.

Sixth formers base themselves at one school and attend another if they have chosen to study something which is taught by a different school.

Sixth formers put their Mind to it

Determined to help Mind (the mental health charity), 50 Stafford sixth formers walked 10.5 miles on Wednesday 25th October as they circled the town calling at all their schools along the way.

It was a tall order, following the soggy paths which had been drenched by Storm Babet just days before, but the students – accompanied by their Heads of 6th and the Partnership Manager – pressed on. Between Stafford Manor High School; Blessed William Howard Catholic High School; King Edwards VI High School, Sir Graham Balfour School and The Weston Road Academy they explored some of the town’s greener corridors (including the Isabel Trail, Two Waters Way and the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal).

Maggie Smart, who manages the Partnership, said “I’m absolutely delighted to see how the students from all the different schools have joined forces to complete this challenge. After over 10 miles, they’re sure to need a little sit down but can be very proud of their efforts. They wanted to support Mind to make sure that nobody has to face a mental health problem alone and have raised upwards of £700.

“This challenge was all about covering the miles on their own two feet but it’s also hoped that, discovering these routes, might result in some hopping on their bikes/strolling between lessons too. Some of the schools are just one mile apart and others have a maximum of four miles between them so it’s like one big sixth form campus – good preparation for the students’ university days which will come around all too soon.

“Stafford’s sixth form provision is really quite unique because, whilst all the schools retain their own independent identity and ethos, collaboration – via the Partnership - takes place where it is clear students will benefit. Students are supported by all the necessary pastoral care and academic tutoring provided by teaching staff who often know them well.”
